History

From Employee Ownership Index
Jump to: navigation, search

The original 10% index was started in 1992 by employee ownership advisory firm Capital Strategies. The idea for the index came from the USA where a similar index was maintained during the 1990s.

From 2000 to 2008, the index was maintained and published by City law firm Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP following their acquisition of the employee ownership advisory practice of Capital Strategies in 2000.

From 2008, the index has been owned and maintained by Capital Strategies.

From June 2013, the index is calculated by FTSE and calculated back to January 2003 using FTSE index methodology. Research and selection of qualifying companies for inclusion in the index is undertaken by Capital Strategies. From June 2013 onwards, index updates will be published on this website, which is managed by Capital Strategies.

Following the involvement of FTSE and the change in methodology with effect from the June 2013 update, the original 10% index has been discontinued. The archive of performance statistics, index values and press releases for the original 10% index are shown below.

Performance of the original 10% index against the FTSE All Share

The original 10% index consistently outperformed the FTSE All-Share over 3, 5 and 10 years. Even over one year, when out-performance has been less consistent, the average out-performance was 9.4%. The new FTSE-calculated 10% index has a different pattern of out-performance; go to Performance for an explanation.
